The Future is Ours will take place between January – March 2027.
What is the Future is Ours project about?
The Future is Ours is a fully-funded creative project that gives young people in Talgarth the chance to explore the issues that matter most to them and share their ideas about the future of their community. The project uses storytelling and filmmaking to help young people tell their own stories and make their voices heard.
Rather than being asked questions by researchers, participants will work as active contributors, helping shape the project and deciding what topics they want to explore.
We hope through this process young people feel that their views matter and that they can play an active role in shaping the future of Talgarth as well as strengthen connections between young people and their community.
The project is being delivered by an Action Researcher from Black Mountains College‘s Centre for Collaboration in Community Connectedness (C4) and creative filmmakers from Mud and Thunder.
Why are we running this project?
Young people are an important part of Talgarth’s future. Community conversations have highlighted the need to listen to, involve and support young people in shaping the future of the town. This opportunity will develop transferable skills in storytelling; interviewing and active listening; filming and audio recording. Storytelling and film making is a powerful way of enabling people to have their voices heard, identifying what matters to them, and can be used as an influential tool for social change.
At the same time, C4 is exploring how communities can prepare for social, climate and economic challenges in the future. We believe that young people are not only affected by changes in their communities but can also help create positive change. This project provides a space for participants to contribute ideas, develop skills and make a difference in the place where they live.

What will you get out of the project?
The project will bring together up to 15 young people aged 16-25 who live, study, work or have a connection to Talgarth.
By taking part in the project, you can expect:
- A welcoming and supportive environment.
- Opportunities to meet other young people from different backgrounds.

- Building new skills in research, storytelling and filmmaking.
- Support from experienced researchers and filmmakers.
- Taking part in creative projects and decision-making can help you feel more confident, more connected and better able to express your views.

- Four face-to-face in person creative workshops.
- Ongoing support from researchers, peers and filmmakers.
