Background of BMC:
Black Mountains College (BMC) is a unique college based in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park and Rhondda Cynon Taf on the edge of the Cardiff Metropolitan Area. BMC is re-imagining what education is for and how it is delivered. We teach innovative tertiary education programmes focused on future vocational skills and a degree programme called ‘Sustainable Futures’.
We are entering our fifth academic year and have students of all ages and backgrounds, two centres in Talgarth and Treherbert and various community-based teaching venues in each centre.
Purpose of the role:
You’ll manage facilities across our Talgarth and Treherbert campuses, with a strong focus on health, safety, security, and compliance. This includes overseeing maintenance, repairs, and site improvements, coordinating contractors and cleaning staff, managing college vehicles, and timetabling use of vehicles and buildings. You will work closely with our Land Agent to help coordinate our student accommodation options.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the day-to-day operation and upkeep of all college sites, buildings, accommodation, vehicles, and teaching spaces.
- Coordinate all maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and site improvements; carry out minor routine tasks yourself (e.g. replacing lightbulbs). Negotiate costs for external work and keep to budget.
- Supervise and oversee contractors and cleaners, and Line Manage the College Bus Drivers and internal Maintenance Workers.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and legal requirements for our sites and vehicles, working with contractors to schedule routine work (e.g. PAT testing, fire safety, water testing, electrical testing, septic tank, chimney sweeping, MOT’s, vehicle servicing, vehicle insurance etc.).
- Work with the Finance team to purchase equipment and supplies, manage contracts, and ensure insurance and liability coverage.
- Monitor and maintain first aid kits, site signage, and fire safety equipment.
- Carry out and record regular site inspections and risk assessments; ensure all teaching and social activities are appropriately risk assessed.
- Manage incident and accident reporting, proactively taking actions to remedy potential hazards and improve safety policies and procedures.
- Manage waste disposal, recycling, and hygiene standards across all facilities.
- Maintain asset registers, inventories, and stock levels of all college equipment, tech, and facilities/cleaning supplies. Ensure all teaching, office, and IT equipment is available, serviced and functional.
- Liaise with the Land Agent to manage student housing: maintenance and repairs, sourcing new properties, pre-tenancy checks, cleaning, furnishing, and utilities.
- Work with the Student Journey Team to advertise and allocate accommodation.
- Coordinate timetabling for vehicle use and minibus runs, teaching spaces, and coordinate use of facilities for internal and external events.
- Manage building access, keys, and security codes.
- Ensure all staff and visitors are briefed on health and safety, security procedures, and equipment or vehicle use.
- Liaise with our Land Agent and Health and Safety consultants as required.
- Support the smooth running of all on-site activities and events.
- Maintain records, databases, and reports related to facilities and operations.
- Identify and implement improvements aligned with BMC’s climate-focused ethos (e.g. solar power, rainwater harvesting).
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Project management skills and experience
- Health and Safety qualification (must be willing to complete an IOSH course)
- Strong organisational and administrative skills; excellent attention to detail
- The ability to work accurately and efficiently, prioritising your workload
- First Aid qualification (minimum Level 2)
- Full driving licence and use of car
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- Prior experience in facilities/estates/student accommodation management
- Risk Assessment training
- Fire safety training
- Property compliance experience
- Welsh speaker
