Community Engagement Officer 

Hours of work: Part-time (18.75 hrs per week – 0.5 FTE) 
Contract: Fixed Term 
Reporting to: Director of Public Education  
Salary: £27,300 pro rata
Holiday entitlement: 28 days + bank holidays + 3 days Christmas shutdown 
Main place of work: Treherbert, Rhondda Cynon Taff

We are seeking a Community Engagement Officer within our Treherbert campus to work with the communities of Rhondda to develop new partnerships and pathways that contribute towards climate adaptation and education.

About Black Mountains College 

Black Mountains College is an educational charity; a radical new institution dedicated to climate action and adaptation. We offer three levels of education: further education (vocational training), higher education (undergraduate) and short courses, as well as public education delivered across the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.  

We help people in every sector and of all ages understand what the climate emergency means for them and prepare for just and appropriate responses to the multiplying impacts emerging. At the heart of our operations is Troed-yr-Harn farm, a beautiful venue for land-based learning and agro ecological experimentation on 120 acres of the Black Mountains outside Talgarth, Powys, in Wales.   

Duties and Responsibilities

As the Community Engagement Officer, you’ll need to:  

  • To establish relationships and networks within Rhonnda Cynon Taff from the public, private, and community & voluntary sectors. 
  • To create meaningful partnerships that meet the needs of all parties.  
  • To represent the college at external networking events and meetings. 
  • To lead all consultation activities with the community and student base. 
  • To identify and develop projects with the community. 
  • To facilitate short courses, workshops, and community engagement events. 
  • To manage project budgets, working with fundraising and finance to ensure they are appropriately resourced. 
  • To manage project monitoring and evaluation processes. 
  • To identify potential student volunteering opportunities and share with the academic team. To develop case studies on college projects and student activities.  
  • To identify opportunities for student recruitment and marketing within the region, communicating back to the public education team. 
  • To assist in the promotion of Black Mountains College, its activities and learning opportunities to ensure that all sectors of the community are aware.  
  • To support and engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and varying needs, ensuring inclusive and equitable practice. 
  • To ensure continuous development of skills and knowledge required for the role. 
  • To work within all policies and procedures including health and safety, safeguarding, and data protection. 
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of responsibility of this role.
Qualifications and Skills

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • At least two years’ experience of working within communities. 
  • Understanding of the principles of community engagement. 
  • The ability to communicate with and engage a diverse range of individuals and organisations. 
  • Experience of facilitating workshops, events, and community activities. 
  • Understanding of education and training within a community setting. 
  • Experience of delivering projects and managing associated budgets. 
  • Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation systems. 
  • The ability to prioritise and manage competing workloads. 
  • The ability to drive with access to a car, and or the ability to use public transport effectively.  

Desirable Qualifications & Skills

  • Welsh language speaker 
  • Experience of working within Rhondda Cynon Taff and/or Cardiff 
  • Knowledge of climate adaptation and climate change
