NVQ Level 1 Diploma
Course introduction
The land-based sector is very diverse. Our Level 1 NVQ provides the opportunity to gain some knowledge and practical experience in a variety of areas, including land-use, conservation and horticulture. This is the perfect starting point for those looking to explore future careers in these sectors!
This hands-on course will introduce you to essential skills in plant care, habitat conservation, tool handling, and countryside maintenance, providing a strong foundation for further study or entry-level employment in land-based industries.

What will i learn
With a focus on safe working practices, environmental awareness, and career development, you will gain valuable experience through a range of practical modules that cover:
- Safe and effective working practices in land-based industries – Learn to select, use, and maintain tools and equipment safely, while completing risk assessments and accident reports.
- Preparing to work in the land-based industries – Prepare for your future career! Explore routes and career paths in land-based industries, write your CV, and understand your rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
- Identify plants and trees – Learn how to identify trees, shrubs, and plants by their common and scientific names, and learn about their characteristics and uses.
- Assist with the transport and maintenance of tools and equipment – Gain hands-on experience in handling, transporting, and maintaining tools used in land-based industries.
- Contribute to the maintenance of plants – identify poor health in plants and gain an introduction to looking after plants in various settings, including border maintenance, general pruning, soil health, and the use of natural fertiliser and mulch.
- Contribute to the propagation of plants – Gain an introduction to the principles and practices of vegetative and seed propagation techniques, and the first stages of the potting up process. Understand stem cuttings, how to divide plants to prevent damage, and how to provide aftercare.
- Assist with the maintenance of structures and surfaces in the countryside – Get practical experience repairing and maintaining fences, gates, footpaths, and countryside structures, ensuring minimal impact on local biodiversity.
- Introduction to wildlife and conservation – Identify key plant and animal species, and explore food chains and feeding methods. Understand their habitats, including woodland, freshwater, and grassland.
- Animals in the wild and their main features – Study animal classifications, behaviours, and reproduction characteristics, increasing your understanding of wildlife and its role in natural ecosystems.

Whether you’re looking to take your first step into a land-based career or progress to higher-level study, this course provides a strong foundation for your future by covering a variation of topics.
After this course, students may be able to:
- Gain a deeper understanding of the type of career you could pursue, or further study you may be interested in
- Progress to Level 2 or above qualifications in Regenerative Horticulture, Nature Restoration, Coppicing or Forestry!
- Use this recognised qualification and transferable skills you gain for entry-level employment opportunities in the land-based sector
- Gain work as a Countryside Ranger, Trainee Gardener, Farm Worker, Forestry Officer, or in Landscaping or Crop Production
This recognised qualification opens doors to careers or further study in forestry, conservation, or horticulture, with opportunities to work for conservation organisations, charities, woodland groups, local councils, national parks, wildlife trusts, estates, environmental companies, or on farms.

- No exams! You will produce a portfolio of evidence throughout the year and be assessed via practical observations, or brief oral tests.

- As a part of your course, you will undertake the BMC Change in Practice Level 2 module 1-day per week, which will enable you to develop your understanding and skills around sustainable development and employability. In this module, you will cover a diverse range of topics, such as ecosystems and biodiversity, active citizenship and project development.
- Your learning experience will be enhanced through practical activities, field trips, guest lectures, and projects relating to your subject.
- Students under the age of 18 without Grade 4/ C or above in English and Maths at GCSE level will receive additional teaching and support to study for these qualifications alongside their NVQ.

Entry Requirements
No formal grades required, but you should be able to use basic IT including internet and email access.
Cost
Tuition is fully funded. You will just need to ensure you can cover your own living costs for the duration of the course.
Kit Requirements
Warm waterproof clothing and shoes for working outdoors.
