Intro to Woodwork for Women, Non-Binary and Trans People: Making a Tool Tote 

Learn to measure, cut and assemble using basic hand tools to build a wooden container in this workshop for women and non-binary people looking to build confidence in DIY skills. 

The day will start with an introduction to timber types, wood anatomy and an overview of the UK’s timber supply and forestry management. Participants will then learn how to use hand tools to make a simple tool tote, working through cutting components to length with a hand saw, shaping the sides with a hand plane and spokeshave, and assembling with a drill and impact driver. 

Who is this for? 

  • Those who identify as a woman or gender marginalised person, inclusive of all trans and non-binary folks 
  • Looking to build confidence in using hand tools 
  • Wanting to learn basic tool skills to apply to a range of practical projects 
  • Adults – 16 years old and above (under 18s to be accompanied by an adult) 

You will: 

  • Learn basic hand tool skills including measuring, cutting, planing and assembly 
  • Learn how to construct a wooden tote for carrying tools or useful items 
  • Gain an introduction to timber types, wood anatomy, supply chains and forest management
