Dry / Composting Toilets Short Course

Plan, design and build a dry / composting toilet.

Designed for those who seek an alternative to conventional ‘flush-and-forget toilets’, this course will explain why dry/compost toilets are environmentally significant, how to plan for, select an option from the market or design and build your own wooden toilet.

Dry/compost toilets are relevant if you’re concerned about environmental pollution and view human excreta as a valuable resource rather than waste. They offer a practical solution when there is no sewage connection and bring environmental benefits. The course will guide you through some “ready-made” choices available for purchase. Additionally, for those with basic DIY skills, this course will provide guidance on cost estimation and building your own toilet.  We will also consider the regulatory environment. Expect a couple of hours of presentations, followed by group problem-solving sessions to apply your learning and learn from each other.

You will learn:

  • About why dry/compost toilets are important environmentally
  • About regulations and risks
  • Why toilet use is influenced by behaviour, gender and culture
  • How dry/composting toilets work, and the importance of urinals
  • What systems you can purchase, and how to select a suitable system
  • Prepare a simple design/bill of quantities and costing for a DIY dry/compost toilet
  • Demonstrate how DIY toilets are put together (please note we won’t build a complete dry/compost toilet)
